The Genius of the Jewish Joke by Arthur Asa Berger download in iPad, ePub, pdf
He contrasted how Jewish jokes about Jews are quite different than that of non-Jews about Jews. Berger discusses techniques of humor and how they can be used to analyze jokes. This humor, in addition to providing pleasure, reveals a great deal about Jewish character and culture and, in addition, the human condition. Jewish humor is humor by Jews and about Jews, in whatever medium this humor is found.
Add to basket Add to wishlist Description The Genius of the Jewish Joke focuses on what is distinctive and unusual about Jewish jokes and Jewish humor. The language got a bit stilted and dry at times, but I liked how Berger integrated jokes which he defines as short narratives with a punch line throughout the text as examples. In contrast to the offensive claims in his preface, Berger makes a distinction between the humor of the powerful and the humor of the disempowered, which I felt was incredibly insightful.
Overall, I enjoyed the book immensely. This made it so I missed out on using the yiddish glossary throughout the book, which would have been a big help. Jokes are defined as short stories, meant to amuse, with a punch line, though Jewish humor exists in many other forms-riddles, comic definitions, parodies-as well. His exploration of Jewish cultural norms stemming from the Torah, Jewish accents, and archetypical characters that populate Jewish jokes was also very educational and fun to read about.
He also went deeper to explain how antisemitism and historical and social context influenced tropes in Jewish jokes and humor. Jewish humor is contrasted with other forms of ethnic humor, such as Polish jokes and Italian American jokes. Abraham does not sacrifice Isaac humor and, thus, humor and the Jews are linked early in Jewish history. He even makes the intriguing claim that political jokes as a whole stemmed from Jewish humor a point I would have liked him to have explored in more depth.
